Transport

In the nineteenth century the great British engineers such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel laid the foundations for a transport revolution that has shaped our modern world. On a network of rails that spread across the map, and the infrastructure of pioneering engineering works which carried them - such as the tunnels, bridges and flagship railway stations - the names of the railway companies have become known to enthusiasts all over the world.

The nineteenth century also brought railway travel to the masses, as celebrated in Bradshaw’s travel guides and then, in the 1920’s, the numerous regional companies were grouped into the Big Four with the Great Western Railway (GWR), London Midland & Scottish (LMS), London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) and the Southern Railway (SR). For many these were the golden years of steam.

But it's not all about the trains and this growing selection of transport books also encompasses aviation (balloons, airships, aircraft and even spaceflight, as well as motoring from the Mini Moke to Land Rovers to the London busses, and there are the historic ships such as the SS Great Britain and Henry VIII’s Mary Rose.
